Dear Mrs Willis-Green,

Early Day Motion 178 on climate change

Thank you for coming to see me recently at my constituency surgery, accompanied by your colleague, Mr Kim Power, in his capacity as the coordinator of the local South East Essex branch of Friends of the Earth.

As I explained when we met, I have taken a particular interest in the issue of climate change, not least due to my service in the previous Parliament on the Hous of Commons Environmental Audit Committee (EAC), which considers to what extent the policies and programmes of Government departments and non-departmental public bodies contribute to environmental protection and sustainable development.

You specifically asked me to add my name to Early Day Motion (EDM) 178, which proposes a legal framework for year on year cuts in CO2 emissions – as a discipline towards meeting the 2050 target of reducing CO2 emissions by 60 percent compared with their 1990 levels. As I said at our meeting, there is now a plethora of EDMs with well over 2,000 on the list of those tabled this year alone.

However, I have carefully re-read EDM 178 and, as I do accept that this is an important issue regarding the fate of our planet and of future generations who live on it, I have now signed the EDM and thus added my name to those of almost 400 MPs who are calling for action in this area.

I take it you will be pleased to hear this. I will be writing shortly in similar terms to all of my constituents who signed the postcards which you presented to me, so that they will all be aware of what I have done as well.

Finally, perhaps you would be kind enough to pass this letter on to your colleague, Kim Power, for information.

Yours sincerely

Mark Francois
Member of Parliament for Rayleigh

P.S. I did see the article in the Evening Echo and, although they unfortunately did not use the photograph, I am grateful to you for quoting me so accurately.
